I tracked him all the way back to Voltair Avenue, but it wasn’t really worth the effort. He was long gone by the time I managed to find where he had been hiding all this time, days and weeks of searching rendered both pointless and successful in one fell swoop. Still, I managed to steal his cigarettes, so it wasn’t a complete loss.

“Where do you think he went?” asked my pal, Johnnie. It’s not his real name, of course, but nobody knows his real name, not even him. “Bastard owed me a fifty from that time down by the Bronx.”

I don’t know where he went, and I tell him so. Johnnie snorts – he probably doesn’t believe me. I don’t blame him.I wouldn’t believe me either, if I were him. I take another drag from the cigarette and exhale; tastes just like cancer.

“Of course, if I was him, I’d be in bloody Manhattan by now,” Johnnie continues. Man never learned when to shut up. He screwed up the job in Baconhurst last week with that big gob of his, too.

“Look. We’ll find him,” I say, slightly pissed off with the man. “And then we’ll get our money back.”

Johnnie snorts again, and gobs on the floor. “I’m surprised you’re not more desperate to find ‘im. What with what he did with those kiddies…”

Bam. Fist through the wall.

“We’ll find him. There’s no not finding him. It’s finding him, and there’s nothing else.”
